ACCESSIBILITY FOR ONTARIANS WITH DISABILITIES

People with disabilities are often only thought of as those individuals in wheelchairs or with visible disabilities and/or injuries you can see.  The reality is that disabilities can also be non-visible, including vision, hearing, intellectual, developmental, learning and mental health disabilities.

On June 13, 2005, Ontario passed the Accessibility For Ontarians With Disabilities Act (AODA) and became the first province to enact Legislation that established mandatory access standards for persons with disabilities that applied to public, private and non-profit organizations.  This included specific goals and time-lines for compliance.  Subsequently, on January 1, 2008, Ontario passed the Access Standards for Customer Service (Ontario Regulation 429/07) with a goal for full accessibility targets to be met by 2025.

As part of this new Legislation, AODA training is now mandatory for all Employees.  This includes Workers, Supervisors and Senior Managers.  Making disability education and awareness an integral part of workplace Health and Safety programs.
